The past decade has been quite momentous for
the two time Grammy Award ® winner Rita Coolidge. She recorded a critically
and commercially acclaimed jazz album for Concord Records entitled ‘And So
Is Love’, a live HD DVD and PBS Special, in conjunction with WHYY and HDNet
TV, entitled ‘On Stage At World Café Live’, saw Universal Records release a
41 song retrospective of her four decade long career entitled ‘Delta Lady:
The Rita Coolidge Anthology’ and she of course toured the world nearly
non-stop.
It’s no surprise then, that the next decade
should start equally as strong. Rita and AIX Records are set to release a
monumental audio/video recording, recorded live on stage. The recording, the
first of its kind was recorded and filmed in 5.1 surround, high definition
for Blu Ray and Panasonic 3D. The recording is a 14 song set of Memphis
tinged material that has influenced Ms. Coolidge throughout her life and
career. Also included are her hits “Higher & Higher” and “The Way You Do the
Things You Do”. Other songs on the set include, ‘Shoo Ra’, ‘Brickyard
Blues’, ‘People Get Ready’, ‘Can’t Stand The Rain’, ‘Take It To The Limit’
and many more.
Joining Rita on stage for this special
recording are musical director & keyboards Jim Cox (Boz Scaggs), guitarists
Laurence Juber (Paul McCartney & Wings) & Dean Parks (Madonna, Elton John,
Steely Dan), drums Marvin “M.B.” Gordy (Doobie Brothers, Neil Diamond), bass
Kevin Axt (Tierney Sutton), backing vocalists Oren, Maxine & Julia Waters
(Michael Jackson, Neil Diamond), sax Brandon Fields (Tower of Power),
trumpet Lee Thornburg (Supertramp, Tower of Power).
Rita joined Delaney and Bonnie’s band and
thus began a storied career in Rock N Roll that led to a solo career and
stardom. In the summer of 1969, Rita was tapped to Join Joe Cocker and Leon
Russell’s “Mad Dogs And Englishmen” tour. Cocker and Russell were so taken
by her that she was aptly given the name ‘Delta Lady’ and Russell wrote a
song of the same name in her honor. Rita recorded 15 albums spanning two
decades (Your Love Has Taken Me) Higher & Higher, Superstar; We’re All
Alone, The Way You Do The Things You Do and sang “All Time High”, the theme
for the James Bond film Octopussy.
During the 1970’s Rita married songwriter and
film star Kris Kristofferson, together the duo won two Grammy Awards ® and
recorded three hit albums; “Full Moon”, “Breakaway” and “Natural Act”. Rita
appeared with Barbara Streisand in the Academy Award ® winning film “A Star
Is Born”. Rita has also had on screen roles in “Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid”
and “Vanishing Point” amongst many others.
Rita has appeared on the cover of Rolling
Stone magazine as well as such prime time TV shows as Saturday Night Live,
The Flip Wilson Show, Midnight Special, Donny & Marie, The Captain & Tenille
Show, The Dean Martin Show, Sally Jesse Raphael, The Sonny & Cher Show,
Sesame Street, The Merv Griffin Show, Bill Maher, Havana Jam 1979. Rita was
one of the original VJ’s on VH1 when it debuted in the 1980’s. Stephen
Stills wrote the songs ‘Cherokee’, ‘The Raven’ and ‘Sugar Babe’ while Leon
Russell wrote the songs ‘Delta Lady’, ‘A Song for You’ and ‘Hummingbird’ in
Rita’s honor.
Rita has recorded and performed with such
luminary artists as, Aaron Neville, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Roger
Waters, Jimmy Buffet, Boz Scaggs, Kris Kristofferson, Joe Cocker, Leon
Russell, Ray Charles, Brenda Russell, Carly Simon, Lee Greenwood, Willie
Nelson, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, Harry Chapin and the list goes on and
on.
Rita Coolidge is the stuff of legend
and her career the envy of every artist that dreams of success and longevity
and she remains today one of Rock and Pop’s most admired singers.
